Design Research is active in the area of industrial design. It seeks to improve the functionality, usability and efficiency of everyday objects through better industrial design.
Design Research is currently focused on two projects: the development of an atopical tactile user interface for handheld electronic devices and the elaboration of a strategy for reducing the variety of electric plugs and outlets used in the world. An atopical user interface enables users to actuate the functions of a device by engaging it as and where their fingers come into contact with it, not by aiming for and engaging specific locations on the interface surface that stand for the functions.
The work on atopical user interfaces has resulted in the filing of a patent application, while the work on electric plugs is in the early stages.
