The issue

Worldwide, there are 15 types of electric plugs in use today. The existence of multiple standards for access to essentially one and the same utility, i.e. electrical power, is a barrier for both for individuals and institutions in a highly globalised and mobile world as well as for the industry that produces powered equipment.

The benefits

By laying out a series of strategic steps to take to reduce the variety of standards in effect today Design Research aims to advance the rationalisation of the electrical connector universe. This will facilitate the production, export and marketing of products for the electrical appliance industry and reduce the need for ad hoc adapters for the consumer.
